Team Talks: Vana Kalampaliki
Vana Kalampaliki is French Subject Leader, Mastering Numbers EY Leader and Reception Teacher at [School name not provided], where she supports early learning, staff development and a culture of high expectations. Her work spans classroom teaching, curriculum leadership and supporting colleagues to grow in confidence and ambition.
Q: What is your role?
A: My day-to-day role as a Reception teacher involves welcoming children and parents, establishing consistent routines, and delivering engaging lessons in phonics, early reading, maths, and communication through play-based learning. I support children’s social, emotional, and physical development throughout the day, manage behaviour positively, and observe and assess progress in line with the EYFS framework. I plan and prepare daily activities and resources, lead whole-class and small-group sessions, and provide opportunities for both indoor and outdoor learning. I also direct and guide teaching assistants, clearly communicating what they are required to deliver in line with the daily plan to ensure learning objectives are met. In addition, I work closely with parents and colleagues, support children with additional needs, and maintain a safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment.
Q: You were identified for Team Talks by your colleagues. Why is this work important to you?
A: I am really pleased to hear that I have inspired colleagues to believe in themselves, continue their studies, and recognise the opportunity to change their lives in the future. This is something that truly drives me, as I strongly believe that with a positive mindset and consistency we can change many things. My personal story reflects this belief. I arrived in the UK in 2003 to continue my studies on my own, with no family or friends to support me. Looking back, I followed my dream through extra studying, hard work and consistency. I remained focused and did not see obstacles as barriers. I share this belief with my team by setting clear visions, encouraging them and supporting them to pursue what they have always wanted to achieve.
“Inspiring colleagues to believe in themselves and pursue their goals is a key part of my work.”
Q: What impact does this work have?
A: My work has a strong and positive impact on my team, my pupils and me personally. By encouraging colleagues to believe in themselves and maintain a clear vision for their future, I help to build a confident and motivated team. This directly benefits pupils, who are taught by adults modelling resilience and ambition. Personally, this work is rewarding and reinforces my sense of purpose in education.
Q: What has shaped your approach? What have you learned along the way?
A: I believe I have been able to deliver this work successfully because of my mindset, personal experience and the supportive environment within my school. My own journey has shaped my approach and allows me to understand the challenges others may face. I lead with a clear vision and belief in people’s potential, while building trusting relationships and offering honest encouragement.
“Consistency, belief and strong relationships are central to helping others grow.”
Q: Which MET value connects most strongly to your work and why?
A: Aim High. I consistently encourage colleagues and pupils to believe in themselves, maintain a positive mindset and pursue their goals despite challenges. While inclusion and teamwork are essential, aiming high is at the centre of how I support others.
Q: What advice would you give to colleagues interested in similar work?
A: Believe in yourself and aim high. Focus on your vision, remain consistent and ask for support when needed. Challenges are part of the journey, but with determination you can achieve your goals.
Q: Any final reflections?
A: I have recently completed my NPQEY and am looking to continue developing professionally while supporting others. I am guided by the idea that excellence comes from consistent effort and belief in what you are working towards.
Thank you, Vana, for sharing your reflections with us in this Team Talk.
