Team Talks: Beatriz Balza
Welcome to our Team Talk with Beatriz Balza, Inclusion Assistant at Great Hollands Primary School.
Beatriz plays a vital role in supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping every pupil feel included and confident to succeed. Alongside her day-to-day role, she has developed and now leads The Nest — a specialist provision for children with complex needs — where she plans activities, guides staff, and provides training to strengthen inclusive practice across the school.
Q: Tell us about your role, Beatriz.
A: My role is to support children with Special Educational Needs and make sure they have the right help in place so they can succeed and feel included. Alongside this, I have developed and lead The Nest – our provision for children with complex needs. I plan the activities, guide the staff, and provide training so that together we can give the best care for the children. I liaise with external professionals, work with colleagues across the school and parents, sharing strategies and offering advice so that all pupils’ needs are met.
Q: Why is this work important to you?
A: I feel really proud and grateful to have been selected for MET Team Talks. Supporting children with SEN and helping colleagues feel confident in meeting their needs is something I care deeply about, so it means a lot to know this work is valued. The recognition makes me feel appreciated and motivates me to keep building inclusive, supportive practice across the school.
Q: What motivates you day-to-day?
A: The children — seeing them grow in confidence and feel included is incredibly rewarding. Leading The Nest and developing our provision has shown me the real difference a supportive environment can make. I also enjoy the versatility of my role and the flexibility to make changes where needed. It’s very satisfying to know that colleagues trust me to get things done and value the support I can offer.

Q: What has helped you deliver this work successfully?
A: I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of the SLT and my colleagues in The Nest. Having a team that welcomes ideas, supports each other, and works together to get things done has made all the difference. I feel very lucky to lead The Nest with such a dedicated team, and I know the children benefit every day from the care and consistency they provide.

Q: Which MET value connects most strongly to your work?
A: Be Inclusive reflects my work leading The Nest, supporting colleagues, and working with parents to ensure every child feels valued and supported.
Q: What advice would you give to colleagues?
A: Believe in yourself, be persistent, and give your best — it’s worth it for the children, the team, and yourself.
Q: What’s next for you?
A: I’m completing an Early Years Educator apprenticeship, then plan to train as an EYFS SENDCo and work towards teacher status to continue growing my skills.
We would like to say a big thank you to Beatriz for taking the time to Team Talk with us.
