Community Champion: Sophie Carter

Next in the Community Champions series, we spoke to Sophie Carter, Fundraising Officer at Daisy’s Dream, a Berkshire-based charity that supports children and families affected by bereavement. Maiden Erlegh school are proud to support Sophie and her team in their latest community project.

Daisy’s Dream has been setting up charity bookshelves across Berkshire, in schools, coffee shops and supermarkets , filled with books donated by local people. Each book is available for a suggested donation of £2, helping to raise both vital funds and awareness of the charity’s work.

“This project is very close to my heart,” Sophie said. “No child should have to face bereavement alone. Knowing how much these families need our support, and how much difference we make, keeps me motivated every day.”

“No child should have to face bereavement alone.”

Her passion for this work is deeply personal. “I lost my close friend to stomach cancer in 2023 and saw first-hand the struggles she faced, knowing she wouldn’t be there for her children. Daisy’s Dream supported her family, and I’ll always be grateful. That experience is why I’m so passionate about giving back.”

Sophie said the project has been made possible by the generosity of the local community. “We couldn’t continue our vital work without the support of those who’ve helped us set up bookshelves or donated books. It really shows the strength of community.”

When reflecting on Maiden Erlegh Trust's values, Sophie chose Work Together. “As a community, we are so much stronger and can support each other. That’s what Daisy’s Dream is all about.”

Looking ahead, the charity hopes to set up even more bookshelves across Berkshire. “They’re brilliant for raising awareness of who we are and what we do,” Sophie explained. “If anyone would like to support us with having a bookshelf, please email fundraising@daisysdream.org.uk — I’d love to help you get started.”

Thank you, Sophie Carter and everyone at Daisy’s Dream for their continued work supporting children and families through some of life’s toughest moments.
