Community Champion: Tom Harvey

We are highlighting Tom Harvey, Head Coach at the Football Fun Factory, whose work with staff and pupils at Cranbury College Primary has brought energy, confidence and connection to children through inclusive sport and physical activity.

Working closely with Claire Willmott and the Cranbury College Primary team, Tom has been delivering weekly sessions designed to build teamwork, social skills and a sense of belonging. The Football Fun Factory uses football as a vehicle for wider child development, placing fun, confidence and personal growth at the centre of every session.

“Our mission is to create an environment where children can express themselves, play, make friends and have fun,” Tom said. “That’s how you make sport and education accessible for everyone.”

Tom explained that the work is rooted in what he has seen across more than ten years in education and children’s support. “I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact a positive activity can have on a child’s development — and most importantly, their enjoyment. Every child learns differently. There is no one-size-fits-all.”

His motivation comes from the pupils themselves. “When I arrive each week, I’m greeted with ‘Coach Tom!’ from across the playground. They want to tell me about their day and help carry the equipment. Their eagerness to explore, take part and show their achievements makes every second worthwhile.”

Tom’s approach is shaped by flexibility, adaptation and genuine partnership with staff. “Space and equipment can be limited, and groups vary week to week. The key is being adaptable. Adults joining in and leading by example makes a huge difference to engagement.”

He chose Be Inclusive as the MET value that best reflects the project. “Football should be for everyone. It’s a simple game that can be adapted to support all abilities, backgrounds and circumstances. Focus on enjoyment, and everything else follows.”

“Football should be for everyone — create the right environment, and children will flourish together.”

Looking ahead, Tom hopes to continue supporting Cranbury College and expand programmes across the wider Trust. “We’ve refined a range of sessions designed to complement the brilliant work already happening in schools. I’m excited about where our partnership with Cranbury College and Maiden Erlegh Trust can go next.”

We thank Tom for his commitment to creating joyful, inclusive spaces where children can thrive through movement, connection and play.
