Student Stories – Jermaine, Year 11: Football Academy Success
Our next Student Story is about Jermaine, a Year 11 student at Maiden Erlegh School in Reading, whose commitment to football has taken him from grassroots matches with family to earning a two-year contract at Reading Academy.
Jermaine first fell in love with football as a young child, watching matches with his dad and playing with his cousins. He played at grassroots level from the age of six and, after taking time away from the sport to focus on his education, returned with renewed motivation at 13. Less than a year later, he was offered a trial at Reading Academy, putting him on the pathway towards professional football.
He describes football as something that can “change people’s lives,” and sees it as more than a hobby — a dream that young people work towards every day. His family have supported him throughout, and teachers have offered advice and feedback to help him balance school and sport.
Jermaine has faced moments of self-doubt, but his determination to progress helped him push through and keep believing in himself. He says this mindset has strengthened other parts of his life too, helping him stay committed and focused.
His standout moments so far include scoring at the Select Car Leasing Stadium and being offered a two-year contract at Reading Academy — achievements that reflect his hard work and ambition.
Reflecting on what he’s learned, Jermaine shared one message:
“Your talent is your gift — your hard work is your responsibility.”
Jermaine, you’ve put so much into your football, and it shows. A fantastic achievement.
