Community Champion: Ruth Evans

We’re back with our Community Champions series! This feature highlights Ruth Evans, Chair of the School Advisory Board at Maiden Erlegh School, whose work helps strengthen governance and maintain a clear connection between school leadership and the wider community.

As Chair of the SAB, Ruth works with senior leaders to provide both support and constructive challenge, helping ensure decisions contribute positively to the whole school community. Alongside her professional role in IT, she values the opportunity to contribute to education in a different way. “As a parent, it is especially important to me that school is a safe and happy place to learn and to work,” she said.

“It’s a team effort.”

Ruth is motivated by the variety of the role and the opportunity to see the school in action. Regular visits give her insight into both successes and challenges, helping the SAB stay connected to day-to-day school life. She also highlighted the value of Trust-wide support, including training and governance guidance, which enables SAB members to carry out their roles effectively.

Reflecting on recent experiences, Ruth noted the inclusion of SAB members in the Trust conference. She described leaving with a stronger sense of connection and a clearer understanding of the commitment to inclusivity. She also spoke about the importance of celebrating student outcomes, referencing a recent production as an example of the confidence and creativity across the school community.

One of the key challenges in her role is ensuring all voices are heard. Ruth works to keep meetings focused and productive while making sure that different perspectives are included in discussions and decision-making.

When reflecting on MET values, Ruth identified most strongly with Work Together. She explained that effective governance relies on collaboration between SAB members, school leaders and the wider Trust, with everyone working towards the same goal of supporting pupils and staff.

Looking ahead, Ruth is focused on welcoming new SAB members and supporting them to contribute. As membership evolves, she values the opportunity to bring in new perspectives and continue strengthening the work of the Board.

She also recognised the contribution of others who support the SAB. “I’d like to thank our Clerk, Sue. She helps me plan the SAB meetings and I appreciate her advice.”
